Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) is sharpening his diplomatic--and comedic--skills.

Over the weekend, Obama called a reporter who demanded an apology from the senator for hurting his chances in the love department. Nicklaus Lovelady of the Daily Herald in Henry County, Ga., wrote this month that at an Obama news conference in southern Illinois two years ago, the senator said the reporter had a "baby face," embarrassing him in front of a woman he was trying to impress. Lovelady said the woman gave him the cold shoulder.

"Thanks to everyone's favorite new senator, I lost big time," Lovelady wrote in the Herald. "Obama owes me a public apology for making me look like a court jester and for blocking my shot."

Well, Lovelady finally got his wish. National Public Radio's "Wait Wait . . . Don't Tell Me" last weekend aired audio of Obama calling the reporter to make amends. "I'm calling to publicly apologize for messing up your game," the senator told Lovelady. "I read that. I felt terrible. I didn't know there were any ladies around. I just wanted to let you know that I'm deeply sorry. But if she was that superficial, she wasn't worth it."
